He Returns Victorious by John Buxton
George Washington at Mount Vernon December 24, 1783
The Revolutionary War has ended. The preceeding
day George Washington has resigned his military commission at Annapolis
and ridden towards his home with his man servant and several of
his aides. They spent the night at Queen Ann Tavern (on the Patuxent).
Late the next afternoon, they reach the gates of Mount Vernon in
time for dinner. It is Christmas Eve. They are welcomed by Martha,
the Custis children and the servants.
