In the early days, getting around the falls of Niagara was no easy task. For centuries Native Americans were confronted with this perilous journey. Although its original location is unknown, the Seneca called it, ‘The place where we crawled on our bellies.’ The trail was steep, dangerous, and almost insurmountable. In 1763, after taking control of Fort Niagara, the British constructed a new portage road so large shipments of supplies could be transported to and from the fort. |
