With the arrival of the Europeans came the introduction of the horse. For many woodland people, the animal represented both a draft animal and a new, faster mode of travel. One of the words for "horse" in Cherokee is Soquili, which means "Burden Bearer" and reveals the original use of the horse for the Cherokee people. During the mid-18th century however, horses were kept, ridden and were simply a normal part of everyday life in Cherokee country.
