About the painting:
The major treaties of the 18th century were, in part, designed to delineate the territories which were still being held by the Native peoples and which lands would be conceded to the colonists. The problem with these agreements was that they were largely ignored by the colonial citizens. Individuals consistently ignored boundaries and encroached on Native lands looking for places to settle. Often, violence followed them as these illegal settlers pushed their way into Native territory. The Native inhabitants once again found themselves seeking justice while bearing the very treaties designed to protect them. |
